truth-uThe question what is truth is an interesting one. It is interesting because depending on your point of view the truth might change. Is truth relative or is truth objective? Two individuals may hold drastically different points of view on an issue, both claiming that their perspective is truthful.

Does our context, social location, gender, age, economic status, political affiliation shape the way we view the truth?

We would like to think that any one issue can only have one truth. That only one perspective can be correct and all others are inaccurate or false.

The question ‘what is truth’ is what Pilate asks Jesus in our Gospel reading this Sunday. It is also a question which we should ask ourselves.

Text: John 18: 33-38

Questions for Sunday

  • What does the word ‘truth’ mean to you?
  • Have you ever held a position you thought to be true, only to later learn you were wrong?
    • If yes, how did you feel?
  • Jesus says in John 14, “I am the way, and the truth and the life.” What do you think about this statement?

Prayer for Sunday

Gracious and holy God, in our questioning and in our searching we fall before you and your infinite wisdom. What is truth we wonder? How do we find it? We pray that it is realized in your love and that our eyes and ears, our hearts and minds may always be open to its leading. Amen.
