hosannaThis Sunday is Palm Sunday, a day where we mark the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. A day where we shout out, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”

That king is Jesus. Jesus who rides on the back of a young donkey, with robes placed over the road to mark his royalty. Jesus who tells us that should the crowd grow silent, “the stones will cry out.” This is Jesus, our king.

Yet, Jesus is not the only king who enters Jerusalem in preparation for Passover. Unrest in the city has brought Pilate, the Roman governor, to the city. We have a clash of ideologies, a clash of cultures, a clash of kings.

We know how the story ends. The question we are left to ask ourselves is which king do we cheer for?

Text: Luke 19:28-40

Questions for Sunday

  1. What do you find difficult to believe about this story?
  2. Do you find it troubling that Jesus, who until this point has been humble, has now assumed a mantle of kingship?
  3. Why do you think the Pharisees commanded Jesus to silence the disciples?

Prayer for Sunday

Gracious God, I make way for you in my life. I acknowledge that you are the Lord of my life and I am thankful for the many ways you have cared for me. As Holy Week begins allow me to focus on Jesus and to gain some measure of understanding about his life and death. Amen.
