What is the purpose of God’s law?

What did Jesus mean when he said, “I came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it.”

Our passage this Sunday continues our look at the Sermon on the Mount. We find Jesus instructing the disciples on some of the finer points of the law. However, as we look at the passage we see before us a standard that we have trouble reaching.

What we also find is that in each of the descriptions of the law that Jesus provides it is never just about the individual. Each of the interpretations of the law which Jesus provide for us indicate that we are in relationship with others. We are not making our choices in a vacuum and Jesus makes it abundantly clear that our decisions matter.

Question for Sunday

  • What is Jesus trying to teach about the law?

Prayer for Sunday

Holy and gracious God, I come before your presence with all humility. I confess that I have not always followed your laws and commandments. Forgive me I pray and allow me to live in your grace and mercy. In Jesus name. Amen.
