This Sunday is Pentecost, when the church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit. With the ascension of Christ, room is made for the Holy Spirit to come and do its work.
In our reading from John’s gospel Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as a Spirit of truth that will testify on Christ’s behalf. This is a powerful message which speaks to God’s continuing work and action through and in creation. Jesus then requests that the disciples go and also testify on his behalf. A powerful connection is made between the work of the Holy Spirit and the work of the disciples.
Text: John 15: 26-27
