banquet-luke-14I imagine that most of us have attended a wedding or some other social gathering. Events such as these are always enjoyable times. However, I wonder where you were seated during the event? Did you sit near the front or the back? Why?

Of course, the answer to this question might change from event to event. At your child’s wedding you may have sat at a table near the front. At the wedding of a work colleague you may have been near the back. The context of the event changes how we view it and how important it is to us.

In our reading for Sunday in Luke’s gospel Jesus is at a banquet. It is a curious event as it is held on the Sabbath at the house of a Pharisee. In the verses before our reading begins Jesus even heals a few people. Jesus was being watched very carefully, yet we can observe that Jesus was also paying attention to what other people were doing.

Questions for Sunday

  • Where do you think Jesus sat?
    • Why?
  • What do you think Jesus means when he talks about a banquet?
  • Who do you typically invite to your social events?

Prayer for Sunday

Heavenly Father, when the time of the banquet comes I pray I may enter in with all your people. Allow me to invite people into my life the way that you invite them into yours. That my life may be a reflection of your love. In Jesus name, Amen.
