Have you ever faced temptation?
Did you give in?
For most people I imagine the answer to this questions is yes.
Temptation is a large part of what it means to be human. We face temptation every day in a wide variety of formats. In some instances temptation is rather benign: Will we have a piece of chocolate even though we are trying to lose weight. On other occasions temptation can destroy our lives: Will we steal from our employer or will we cheat on our spouse.
The underlining issue of temptation is a recognition of what the consequence of our actions will be. I am not referring to the negative implication that the temptation implies. Derailing our diet, the guilt of stealing or the end of a marriage.
The consequence I am referring to is the one which happens when we do not succumb to temptation in the first place. This consequence is one of self growth and maturity.
Jesus was tempted by the Devil three times. In each instance Jesus demonstrated a clear understanding of his trust in God. That he was not alone for the Spirit traveled with him.
