harvestJesus is heading towards Jerusalem. As he journey’s there he will visit many communities. To prepare the people for his visit Jesus gathers some of those who have been following him and sends them out ahead. They are to heal the sick and proclaim that the Kingdom of God is near. If a village does not welcome them they are to shake the dust off their feet and move on.

Now when I take a trip I usually take the time to prepare for it. I pack my bags, read up on where I am going, perhaps even creating a travel itinerary. Jesus instructs his followers to do none of these things. Instead, he tells them to take no bag or sandals. If I’m honest I’m not sure this is a trip I want to go on.

What Jesus was doing was equipping his followers for what would be a difficult journey. They were advised they would encounter hardships along the road and the advice Jesus provides prepares them for that. What is most interesting is that before Jesus tells them how to make the journey he advises them that the harvest is plentiful.

This is good news and just as the harvest was plentiful then, so it is today. With many people never having heard the good news offered by Jesus Christ.
