In Psalm 69:6 we find the following words:
Lord, the Lord Almighty,
may those who hope in you
not be disgraced because of me;God of Israel,
may those who seek you
not be put to shame because of me.
Often the greatest barrier to receiving new followers of Jesus are those who currently follow Jesus. Often as disciples we live contradictory lives which some find out of step with the teachings of Jesus.
Those who are curious about Jesus ask, “Why would I follow Jesus or become a Christian when what I am learning about it does not match with the church’s behaviour?”
The question is general and deliberately broad, but serves to reinforce the point. Sometimes we get in our own way, sometimes we get in the way of Jesus.
Gracious God, instill in me a clean heart. Allow my words, my thoughts, my actions, indeed my entire life to be a reflection of your will and purpose. That others would see your light and love in me. That through me, you would be reached. That none would know disgrace or shame for my actions. In Jesus name, Amen.
