This Sunday we find ourselves reading one of the most oft-quoted pieces of scripture, John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” A wonderful promise from God to us.

This is a passage that has provided a deep sense of comfort to many people over the ages. However, it is not a passage found in isolation. As ever we need to be mindful of the wider context that these words are found. How do the verses before and after John 3:16 inform our understanding of these words?

A reminder that this Sunday we will celebrate the Sacrament of Communion and it is Daylight Savings Time, so be sure to set your clocks.

Text: John 3: 1-17
