Our Children

The passage today deals with the story of Mary, Joseph and Jesus as they travel to Jerusalem for Passover. We are told that is an annual trip that the family takes. However, this year Jesus decides to stay behind and spend extra time in the Temple.

It is a scene for great concern for Mary and Joseph who do not initially realize that Jesus is not with the caravan. Imagine five or six days trying to find your child, it would send most parents into a panic, Mary and Joseph are no exception.

What I find most striking about this passage is how comfortable Jesus is in the Temple. This shouldn’t surprise us as readers, however the question we might ask is how comfortable are our own children in church? What do we do to welcome them?
